MEXT Scholarship
The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship supports international students who come to Japan for graduate study. Hosei University accepts MEXT scholars through two routes:
- Embassy Recommendation
- University Recommendation
This lab belongs to the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, in the major Systems Engineering & Science (Management Sciences Track). You can join it in the Japanese-taught program or the English-taught IIST program.
Which route applies to you
| Embassy Recommendation | University Recommendation | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can apply | Applicants screened by the Japanese embassy or consulate in their country | Students at one of Hosei’s overseas partner universities |
| Applications open | Around April | Around November |
| Arrival in Japan | April or September of the following year | September of the following year |
If your university is not a Hosei partner, the Embassy Recommendation is your only route.
Embassy Recommendation
- Apply at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country around April, and pass its primary screening (around June).
- Request a Letter of Acceptance by email to mext@hosei.ac.jp by around 1 September (Japan time). Attach the application form as a Word file, your certificate of passing the primary screening, and copies of everything you submitted to the embassy. The review takes about a month and the university closes in mid-August, so apply early. You do not need to contact the professor first.
- Take the secondary screening by MEXT (around November). Results arrive between January and March.
University Recommendation
Your university announces the call around November, Hosei nominates candidates to MEXT in February, and results arrive around June. The partner list is on Hosei’s University Recommendation page. For questions about this route, ask the international office at your own university.
